House Fixing Frustrations

By Damian Lanfranchi

Did you just buy a new place or are you fixing up an older one?

Repairing a house can become a full-time job – especially if you have multiple projects going at once. If you’re one of those “A” personality types, you may particularly find yourself quickly getting tired and frustrated things aren’t going fast enough.

Well – here are two very true facts.

Believe and understand these facts and your house fixing frustrations will begin to fade away.

Fact #1 – House repairs always take longer than expected. Whether you do them yourself or hire a pro, repairing a house isn’t like filling up your gas tank. Every project is unique and a hundred things can pop up along the way. Even the best planners find themselves way behind schedule.

Fact #2 – There are two kinds of people – people who enjoy fixing up a house and people who don’t!

You see, most of the time, folks who get all frustrated trying to fix their house do so because they forget Fact #1! Every time something takes a little longer than expected, they get angry and frustrated. They blame themselves… blame others… blame everyone!

And if you’re a perfectionist, you might even find yourself refusing to feel any sense of satisfaction until every last repair is complete!

Well – not to burst your bubble – house projects are never complete! How many times are you painting a room and scrape a hole in the hallway carrying the ladder? Or you install a fancy new light fixture, but drill one too many holes in the ceiling in the process?

They’ll ALWAYS be more improvements to make. And they’ll ALWAYS be something to fix. A house is NEVER complete.

So the sooner you accept these two simple facts of house repairs, the sooner you’ll begin enjoying the process rather than giving yourself high blood pressure!

A good way to manage your expectations is to set small underachiever goals. So instead of constantly thinking about a never-ending list of repairs – just think of it as – “Hey, I just need to knock out one little project per weekend for 8 weeks to give my house a total face lift!”

No matter what your personality type or situation, fixing up a house really can be one of the most therapeutic and rewarding endeavors. Just take a deep breath and let yourself enjoy the process.
